About to be a mother? 10 Books for Mothers You Should Know About
But despite all these changes and particularities, there is something that always remains the same: the desire of mothers to offer their children THE BEST and, consequently, the doubts about how to achieve it, about how to be the best mother for your children.
Unlike years ago, today we have at our disposal an infinite amount of information about the changes that the mother’s body undergoes, about how to take care of our pelvic floor during pregnancy and postpartum, about the famous hypopressives, about what the baby is like, how to feed him, how to stimulate his creativity,… It is important to choose the sources well, dose the information and not be overwhelmed by it. Only in this way will we be able to know better and act freely and responsibly in the education of our children.
In a previous post we already introduced you to the book by illustrator Esther Gili, 39 weeks and my experiences as a novice mother.
Kiss Me Much: The Ultimate Guide to Raising Your Children with Love, by Carlos González
“Don’t catch him, he’s getting used to your arms”, “so big and you still breastfeed him?”, “this child is kidding you”… Contrary to those who are suspicious, the paediatrician Carlos González has written this book for mothers, fathers, teachers, grandparents… who want to educate their children with love and respect. With studies, concrete examples and bibliographic references, Carlos González helps to understand how children function and, in the opinion of many parents, empowers families to act according to their instinct.
Fall asleep, child. The Estivill Method for teaching children to sleep , by Eduard Estivill
Unlike the previous one, this book offers a series of rigorous rules and guidelines for teaching children to sleep. Famous for his method (which must currently have as many defenders as detractors), Estivill explains the steps to follow to prevent the little ones from staying up late during the night and learning to fall asleep on their own. A more than tempting promise for many families suffering from the consequences of childhood insomnia 😉
Sleeping without tears, by Rosa Jové
Another different method for our baby to have quality sleep. The author is against letting the child cry, defends breastfeeding as an important factor for children to sleep well (due to contact with the mother, soothing sucking and the composition of the milk), and also highlights the benefits of co-sleeping (sleeping with the baby).
What to Expect When You’re Expecting, by Heidi Murkoff
A classic in the field. Millions of copies of this book for mothers, which has already been published in numerous editions and is known in some circles as “the Bible of pregnant women”, have been sold. It includes explanations from pregnancy planning to postpartum. Thus, details of the growth of the fetus during pregnancy, how the mother should be cared for, what the birth will be like, the first weeks of the baby… There are almost 700 pages.
La Volátil, Mamma Mía!, by Agustina Guerrero
Quite the opposite of the previous one, here is a book for mothers who want a more casual approach to pregnancy. They will share the nine months of pregnancy with one of the best-known characters in contemporary comics. It includes doubts, fears, joy, cravings, stretch marks… based on the author’s own experience. Easy to read and fun.
Oh, my dad! Because they count too , by Papá 2.0
Another classic of the cartoons, similar to the previous one in its humorous tone but unlike most books about pregnancy, this one is written from the point of view of the parents. Also inspired by real experiences, it tries to accompany the parents and take the heat off the diaper change or the discussions with the mother about how to dress the baby, among other moments.
Motherhood and the Encounter with One’s Own Shadow, by Laura Gutman
Let’s go about contrasts. This is a profound book that invites women to reflect on their role as mothers and to question preconceived ideas. The relationship with the baby, recognizing oneself… motherhood brings to light the most hidden aspects of human psychology and Laura Gutman proposes that we face it and take advantage of that experience to get to know ourselves better and not delegate our shortcomings to our children.
Mama, by Mariana Ruiz Johnson
And to lighten the matter a little, we propose this beautiful illustrated album. Poetic, emotional, brief but intense. It is an ode to mothers and, by extension, to Mother Earth. A story to share with children.
A Gift for Life: A Guide to Breastfeeding, by Carlos González
Another book for mothers by the fashionable pediatrician, in this case dedicated entirely to breastfeeding. González is an advocate of breastfeeding, understood not only as a way of feeding the baby but also as a source of affection, comfort, attention… Practical information is given for mothers who want to breastfeed.
Se me hace bola, by Julio Basulto
Beyond breastfeeding, in this book you will find useful tips for what is known as “complementary feeding” (when new, solid foods are introduced into the baby’s diet). Basulto understands mealtime as a space of happiness and answers questions that will interest all families, such as what to do when the little ones eat less than we expect, how to offer new foods in an attractive and healthy way?
